WinField® United Canada partners with independent ag retailers and their growers to put the latest CROPLAN® canola varieties to the test. Running these trials in your own backyard means you get a firsthand look at how CROPLAN performs across all sorts of conditions—and you can have full confidence in the data because it's as real as it gets (no lab coats required!).
In 2024, WinField United collected yield data from 39 retail sites across the Prairies—basically, the canola Olympics. CROPLAN went head-to-head with some of the industry’s biggest competitors. Spoiler alert: it didn’t back down. Let’s break things down by each hybrid to see how they did individually.
CP24L3C LibertyLink®
This new variety had a busy year, being tested in more than 30 different trials across the prairies. CP24L3C is an innovative variety that demonstrated consistency and outshone most competitors. It boasts a strong pod-shatter score, excellent clubroot package, and great yield potential. Trial yield results for varieties found in at least 11 of the trials are below:
Colin Cameron, WinField United Market Development Manager for Alberta, shares his highlights of CP24L3C.
“CP24L3C is the next great step in the CROPLAN LibertyLink portfolio,” says Cameron. “It has fantastic yield potential and the introduction of new clubroot protection in this hybrid is tailored for Alberta’s unique growing challenges. Its performance in central Alberta makes it a top choice for those looking for a LibertyLink hybrid.”
Kevin Mathieu, a customer of CashChem located in Ponoka, AB, has first-hand experience growing CP24L3C and shares his experience. “CP24L3C stood nice and harvested awesome. Standability, ease of handling, good harvesting, strong yield, and good price point made me choose CP24L3C for a third of my farm for 2025.”
CP21L3C LibertyLink
Hitting the market in 2021, CP21L3C has been leading the CROPLAN LibertyLink pack since its debut. With an excellent disease package with R rating to blackleg and clubroot, a mid-maturity, strong yield potential and a very good lodging score, this has been a variety growers can count on for exceptional performance.
This powerhouse variety was in 11 field trials across Alberta and Saskatchewan. Overall, it beat out competitors by an average of 4%. Results are found in the table below for all competitor varieties present in at least five of the trials:
“CP21L3C is very vigorous out of the ground, develops very quickly, and responds well to a good fertility program,” shares Mayson Maerz, WinField United Market Development Manager for Saskatchewan.
CP22T1C TruFlex®
CP22T1C is an early maturing variety for shorter season zones. It boasts an excellent straight-cut rating, new clubroot genetics, and provides a strong yield with excellent stress tolerance. These traits were put to the test in some tough competition across seven trials in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Results for varieties that were in five or more of these seven trials are in the chart below:
CP22T1C is spoken of highly by James Burtnack, Manager of CashChem.
“I choose CP22T1C because it consistently performs, has an excellent clubroot package, and being mid-maturing, it fits the region well,” shares Burtnack.
Duane Horvey, WinField United Market Development Manager for Southern Alberta and Southwest Saskatchewan, also shares key traits of the variety.
“CP22T1C is an awesome variety! It has great pod shatter genetics and can stand up to the strong winds of Southern Alberta and Southern Saskatchewan,” elaborates Horvey. “It has a strong clubroot package, and best of all, it can beat the heat with its early maturity. If a rockstar TruFlex variety is what you’re looking for this is the one for you!”
CP21T3P TruFlex
CP21T3P is known for its industry-leading straight-cut genetics within the TruFlex system, excellent yield potential across all acres, enhanced multigenic blackleg resistance, and impressive vigour even on cool soils. These traits helped it perform well above the trial average in the three Saskatchewan trials it was involved in. All varieties found in two or more of the trials are included in the chart below:
“CP21T3P yielded better than the competitor variety we had on the rest of the farm,” says Kolby McDonald, a customer of Manitoba-based retailer Shur-Gro. “Because of its maturity, great pod-shatter, easy combining, and strong yield, we are switching all of our canola to CP21T3P and are excited to see it perform!”
Overall, these results show that CROPLAN canola had another fantastic year! Running a variety of trials across the prairies provides WinField United the opportunity to showcase canola varieties in real-world conditions.
