CROPLAN® Corn Trials: Results in Ontario and Quebec

WinField United Canada
CROPLAN Corn Performance
WinField® United Canada provides a variety of tools to support agronomic decisions for corn crops. This includes technology to determine the appropriate nutrients and crop protection products for specific acres and hybrids. Data from response-to scores assists growers in selecting suitable seeds for their field conditions. Additionally, trials conducted with independent ag retailers and growers test the latest CROPLAN® corn hybrids. These trials offer insights into how each hybrid performs under various locations and conditions, delivering data tailored to the growers' unique growing environment and management style.

In addition to real-world trial results, WinField United is placing emphasis on companion hybrids in Eastern Canada. Companion hybrids are those that match the grower's maturity range, complementing an existing hybrid already included in their production plan. These hybrids offer agronomic benefits that help mitigate uncontrollable risks during the growing season.

To share even more CROPLAN insights, did you know that all CROPLAN seed production is currently grown exclusively in Ontario? Every product is packaged, grown, and distributed from local warehouses in Ontario, helping to boost the regional economy while delivering real-world results.

Now, let's dive into the 2024 trial highlights as shared by WinField United’s Eastern Canadian Agronomy team to give the data enthusiasts' what they came here for!

CP3790VT2P and CP3490VT2P – Northumberland, ON

In a trial conducted in Northumberland, ON, two CROPLAN companion hybrids, CP3790VT2P and CP3490VT2P, demonstrated high yield potential, both exceeding 300 bushels per acre under higher management. The plot had sandy loam soil and was planted in early May. The plot received 200 pounds of total nitrogen, applied half upfront and half through Y-drop application. The plot was also treated with a fungicide at tassel timing. This trial illustrates the yield potential of modern corn hybrids and the extensive selection process behind new CROPLAN launches!

Chadd Taylor, Account Manager for Eastern Ontario, shares why he recommends these two hybrid companions.

“CP3490VT2P is an exceptional hybrid that can be planted first due to its remarkable spring vigour,” states Taylor. “By providing proper care and attention throughout the season, this hybrid will yield significant returns at harvest. It has proven itself a leading choice in the 94 relative maturity market. It is consistently one that I love to package in the CROPLAN corn multi-hybrid portfolio for a sure WIN in the fall!”

“CP3790VT2P is a new hybrid that I nickname ‘BIG TIME’ and I look forward to introducing it to more growers' fields for the 2025 season,” shares Taylor. “CP3790VT2P is a notable hybrid with significant yield potential. I recommend keeping populations moderate, around 32,000, to allow for its flexibility in field.”

CP3980VT2P and CP3790VT2P – Oxford County (Embro, ON)

This trial showcased CP3980VT2P and CP3790VT2P as the top performers and companion hybrids, achieving yields of 287.1 bu/ac and 282.3 bu/ac respectively. The plot received a ground application of fungicide plus Interlock® at the corn silk stage.

“Given that both hybrids exhibit a high yield response to fungicide application, as shown by our Answer Plot® and local trial data, they demonstrated exceptional ROI in this Embro plot,” shares Kaitland VanderSpek, Market Development Manager for Ontario. “This makes them excellent companion hybrids to consider for field application.”

CP4757VT2P/RIB and CP4516TRE/RIB – Tilbury, ON

At the Tilbury trial site, the corn hybrids CP4757VT2P/RIB and CP4516TRE/RIB demonstrated outstanding performance under varying growing conditions. CP4757VT2P stood out due to its strong early vigor, excellent drought tolerance, and consistent yield potential.

“CP4757VT2P has shown great adaptability across different soil types,” elaborates Chris Roy, Account Manager for Southwestern Ontario. “This makes it a reliable choice for maximizing returns in my zone.”

CP4516TRE also impressed in the trial with its standability and superior disease resistance, particularly against stalk rot and northern corn leaf blight. Its grain quality and test weight have remained consistently high, proving its value in both high and moderate management scenarios.

“Both hybrids have shown strong emergence and plant health throughout the season, making them excellent options for growers looking to optimize yield and performance in the Southwestern Ontario region,” shares Roy. “Based on these results, I highly recommend CP4757VT2P and CP4516TRE as dependable choices for corn producers in this area.”

CP2925TRE and CP2585VT2P – Saint-Majorique-de-Grantham, Quebec

CP2925TRE and CP2585VT2P are new additions to the CROPLAN corn lineup and are great companions for CP2790VT2P. In Saint-Majorique-de-Grantham, Quebec, the new hybrids demonstrated notable performance. The plot was planted no-till following winter wheat and a cover crop. 200 pounds of nitrogen was applied in split application. The seedling vigor contributed positively from the start, supporting yield throughout the season. The average yield of the plot was 196.8 bu/acre, with CP2925TRE yielding 213.8 bu/acre and CP2585VT2P yielding 212.3 bu/acre.

Alex Provost, Account Manager for Quebec, shares why he recommends CP2925TRE and CP2585VT2P.

"CP2925TRE catches the grower's attention early in the spring with its amazing vigour, setting itself up for a big fall yield,” elaborates Provost. “The stay green helps this hybrid to maximize the test weight with the awesome fall we had. Each time we visited a plot with a sales rep, they asked if this hybrid will be commercial for the 2025 season!”. You’re in luck, because CP2925TRE had been launched commercially with production/seed available yet for this spring.

As for CP2585VT2P, this hybrid shows excellent yield potential in optimal conditions. “To maximize yields, take advantage of its medium to high response-to nitrogen," says Provost. "Offered in both VT2P and SmartStax®, you can confidently plan for a corn on corn situation if needed."
